- The treatise On the Sacraments only (printed pp. 75-140). The same volume's translation of Ambrose's On the Mysteries is a separate work and is not part of this text. Book, chapter and section are the edition's as printed, with section numbers running on through each book; each chapter is headed by the edition's own summary of its contents. Authorship. The Catechism cites this work as St. Ambrose's, and it is listed under his name here. The 1919 edition did not: its title page calls it a treatise by an unknown author, and Srawley's introduction weighs the case against Ambrose (differences of style from On the Mysteries, which it closely follows) and leaves the question open. Later scholarship has largely returned to Ambrose, reading the six books as his Easter-week sermons as they were taken down by a hearer, which would account for their plainer style. Transcribed from the OCR of the dated 1919 scan, with every doubtful reading checked against the page image or two further scans of the same printing. The work's own text only. Srawley's notes are not transcribed, and the italic in which the print sets scripture quotations is not reproduced.
