Sermones
Partial workSermons
Work coverage: Six sermons, Benedictine numbers 52, 56, 57, 58, 78 and 96, in R. G. MacMullen’s translation. They are the six sermons the Catechism cites that exist in a public-domain English translation. The Catechism cites eleven more (18, 33, 43, 169, 186, 213, 214, 241, 267, 272 and 298); no public-domain English translation of any of them exists, so they appear as citations only.

- Revision
- Text from the CCEL ThML transcription of NPNF1 vol. 6 (Buffalo 1888), which reprints MacMullen's 1844 Oxford translation with light revision and prints each sermon's arabic section numbers but no chapter numbers. The Benedictine chapter numbers come from the same translation's first printing, A Library of Fathers vol. I (Oxford 1844), whose margin sets each chapter's roman numeral beside the text; they were read off the page images of that edition (archive.org sermonsonselecte01augu) and are recorded per sermon, with the printed page, in apps/api/ingestion/works/transcribe-augustine-sermons.ts. Where the 1844 margin opens a chapter partway through a numbered section, the section keeps the chapter in which it begins and the chapter heading is set before the first section it owns; the one exception is Sermon 57, where chapters ii and iii both open inside section 2, so section 2 takes chapter ii. The section numbering of the two printings was checked to agree in every sermon built, and the CCEL text was audited against the 1844 scan's OCR for lost passages before use (no gap of 60 words or more in any sermon; a 300-word excision was detected in each). The CCEL text was then collated word by word against the 1888 scan, and seven places where it departs from the print (three quotation marks, a missing space, and three misread words such as "lightly" for "rightly") are corrected to the print. Sermons are numbered by the Benedictine edition; NPNF and the Library of Fathers number this selection 1 to 97, so their Sermon VI is Sermon 56 here. The work's own text only; the editors' footnotes are not transcribed.

- Text first published Oxford 1844 (A Library of Fathers vol. I, John Henry Parker; year read off the series and volume title pages and Pusey's dated Advertisement), reprinted Buffalo 1888 (Christian Literature Co., NPNF1 vol. 6). Both are pre-1930 publications whose terms have long expired. The CCEL text was fingerprinted to the 1888 printing against the dated scan archive.org aselectlibrary06unknuoft (its revised readings, e.g. "to show" for the 1844 "to shew", appear in that scan and not in the 1844 one).
