Theophylact was a Byzantine scholar and archbishop of Ohrid in Bulgaria. Educated in Constantinople, he wrote commentaries on the Gospels, Acts, Pauline epistles, and minor prophets, often condensing earlier Greek exegetes, especially Chrysostom. His explanations are generally clear, pastoral, and attentive to both literal and spiritual meanings. Latin translations of his work gave Aquinas and later Western readers access to Byzantine commentary.
