Saint Francis de Sales was bishop of Geneva in exile, spiritual writer, missionary, and Doctor of the Church. He worked to restore Catholic life in the Chablais and became known for patient persuasion rather than coercive polemic. His Introduction to the Devout Life taught that holiness is possible in every state of life, while the Treatise on the Love of God offered a deeper theology of charity and prayer. With Jane Frances de Chantal he founded the Visitation order.
