Saint Benedict of Nursia

Monk · abbot · monastic legislator

Saint Benedict was an Italian monk traditionally regarded as the father of Western monasticism. His Rule organizes a stable community around prayer, work, obedience, humility, hospitality, and moderation under an abbot. The Rule’s balance and adaptability allowed it to guide monasteries across medieval Europe and beyond. Most biographical information about Benedict comes from Gregory the Great’s Dialogues, and many details cannot be independently verified.
