Richard Challoner was an English Catholic bishop, apologist, and reviser of the Douay-Rheims Bible. Raised Protestant, he entered the Catholic Church as a young man and was educated at the English College at Douai. As vicar apostolic in England, he ministered when Catholic worship remained restricted and clergy faced legal danger. His eighteenth-century revision modernized the language of the Douay-Rheims translation and became the textual basis of most later English Catholic Bibles, including editions associated with Haydock. Challoner also wrote devotional and historical works, especially The Garden of the Soul and Memoirs of Missionary Priests.
