Giovanni Stefano Menochio

Jesuit priest · biblical commentator · teacher of Scripture and theology · religious superior

Giovanni Stefano Menochio, commonly cited as Menochius, was an Italian Jesuit exegete and administrator. He taught Scripture and theology and eventually served as provincial of the Jesuits in Milan. His Commentarii totius Sacrae Scripturae offered concise explanations of the literal sense of biblical passages, often clarifying grammar, context, and historical circumstances. Because his notes were compact and practical, they became a standard source for later Catholic commentators, including Haydock.
