Evagrius was a highly educated monk who lived in Egypt and became one of the most influential theorists of early Christian asceticism. He analyzed the recurring tempting thoughts that disturb prayer and described stages of purification, contemplation, and knowledge of God. Works such as the Praktikos and Chapters on Prayer shaped Eastern monastic spirituality and, indirectly, the later list of capital sins. Some speculative teachings associated with him were later condemned, so his legacy requires historical nuance.
