Told more than once

The temptation in the wilderness

Matthew, Mark and Luke each tell it. Mark gives two verses and no dialogue; Matthew and Luke give the three temptations, in a different order from one another.

What the accounts share

  1. Mark 1:12-13 and Luke 4:1-13

Both place the temptation immediately after the baptism, and both have the Spirit drive Jesus into the desert for forty days. Mark gives no dialogue at all; Luke gives the three exchanges.

The accounts

Mark 1:12-13

12And forthwith the Spirit drove him out into the desert. 13And he was in the desert forty days, and forty nights: and was tempted of Satan, and he was with beasts, and the Angels ministered to him.

Luke 4:1-13

1And Jesus full of the Holy Ghost, returned from Jordan, & was driven in the spirit into the desert. 2forty days, and was tempted of the devil. And he did eat nothing in those days; and when they were ended, he was an hungered. 3And the devil said to him: If thou be the Son of God, say to this stone that it be made bread. 4And Jesus made answer unto him: It is written, That not in bread alone shall man live, but in every word of God. 5And the devil brought him into an high mountain, and shewed him all the kingdoms of the whole world in a moment of time; 6and he said to him: To thee will I give this whole power, and the glory of them; for to me they are delivered, and to whom I will, I do give them. 7Thou therefore if thou wilt adore before me, they shall all be thine. 8And Jesus answering said to him: It is written, Thou shalt adore the Lord thy God & him only shalt thou serve. 9And he brought him into Jerusalem, & set him upon the pinnacle of the Temple; and he said to him: If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself from hence downward. 10For it is written, that He hath given his Angels charge of thee, that they preserve thee: 11and that in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest perhaps thou knock thy foot against a stone. 12And Jesus answering said to him: It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. 13And all the tentation being ended, the devil departed from him until a time.
